Our Story

A Brief History

A Legacy of Faith and Community

The First United Methodist Church of Valley Center was officially organized in 1879, built upon a foundation of faith, fellowship, and service. The original church building stood proudly at the corner of Main and Meridian—now the site of Emprise Bank—serving as a spiritual home for the early settlers of our growing town.

In 1913, as the congregation expanded, construction began on a new building located at 229 Ash. This location became the center of our church life for many years, witnessing generations of worship, baptisms, weddings, and community events. During this time, the church continued to grow, both in numbers and in spirit, prompting several additions to accommodate an active and engaged congregation.

Recognizing the need for even more space and a more visible presence in the community, land was purchased at the corner of Fifth and Meridian. Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new, modern facility were held on April 4, 1958. This marked a new chapter in the life of the church, one rooted in tradition yet open to the future.

Since that time, we have continued to expand our physical space, acquiring additional land and completing three major building additions to better serve the needs of our members and the wider community. These additions have supported growing ministries, classrooms, fellowship spaces, and outreach efforts.

In 2019, we joyfully celebrated our 140th anniversary—a milestone that reminded us not only of our deep roots but also of the journey still ahead. As we look forward to our 150th anniversary in 2029, we are inspired by the dedication of those who came before us and energized by the call to serve in today’s world.

Through all the changes and challenges over the decades, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to being a place where people can grow in faith, find meaningful community, and make a difference through service and witness. We are more than a building—we are a family of believers, striving to follow Christ, live with purpose, and extend God’s love to all.

We continue to grow—not only in size but, more importantly, in faith, witness, and ministry. And we welcome all who wish to journey with us.
